ADELAIDE
is
undeniably Australia’s greatest hidden asset! It is recognised and
acknowledged internationally as one of the world’s best-planned
cities, it has a population of just over a million people and a
thriving arts and sports culture. It is not a
‘head-office’ city and does not therefore, reach the
international public’s ear to the same extent as other Australian
cities.
The
city has a beautifully preserved Victorian built heritage with
well restored public buildings, and graceful turn of the 20th
century homes – yet it is also the innovation capital in terms of
its arts festivals, its inventions and its wine and food among other
things. Position a British University city in Australia and you’ve
pretty well got Adelaide – it's the nearest thing to the Cape Town
of Australia.
The
climate is Mediterranean – which is why we are able to grow
such outstanding wines, olives, citrus, soft fruits and roses, wheat
and barley. It has four distinct 3-month long seasons … hot
(sometimes extremely hot!) dry Summer, glorious multi-coloured
Autumn, cold (sometimes icy – sometimes glorious!) wet Winters and
stunning, bursting Spring.
South
Australia is the only state which was not convict settled - in
fact it was colonised as a result of the formation of the British
South Australia Company. Sound familiar ?
Adelaide's
people reflect the huge British migration which took place after
the second world war, but prior to that at the turn of the century,
it was German migrants escaping religious persecution, then Italians
and Greeks and more recently people from Malaysia and Vietnam. Now,
it boasts a truly multi-cultural population. This diversity has
resulted in a continental cafe lifestyle of coffee shops and
delicatessens, wonderful local seafood, fresh fruit and vegetables
all superbly presented in a hundred different ways.
